Your Guide, Ron Mallon

Salmon fishing year round. Charter groups for up to six people.

Born and raised in northern Alberta, Ron Mallon was introduced to fishing by his father. He moved to Victoria, BC in 1983 and tried his hand at Salmon fishing. After he caught his first big Chinook he was 'hooked'!

In Ron's early salmon fishing years he had the good fortune to have Dave Homer, a recognized commercial highliner, and his dad, Jack Homer, a real westcoast pioneer, take him under their wings. In the process, Ron absorbed a wealth of knowledge in both the art of fishing and in the operation of a West Coast Troller in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and waters beyond Sooke Harbour.

Five years later Ron picked up a 25 year old ex-commercial West Coast Troller of his own and painstakingly rebuilt it over the next three years to create SIDETRACK CHARTERS.

In 2005 Transport Canada determined that, in order to run a charter business with a vessel of this size and description, Ron was required to obtain his 60 Ton Masters Ticket. Despite the enormous time commitment it required, he is proud to say he is among a handful of people on South Vancouver Island who have this qualification.

To date, Ron Mallon has fished the Victoria to Sooke area for over 25 years and has operated SIDETRACK CHARTERS for almost 20 years.

As a matter of interest, Jack Homer recently passed away at the age of 99. Jack, with the help of his son Dave, charter fished until he was 92 years old. Ron is happy to say that Dave still occasionally comes salmon fishing aboard the SIDETRACK.
